Showing Cavies
Showing cavies is a rewarding hobby for people of all ages. Although these delightful little animals are commonly seen as children's pets they are an ideal companion for adults as well.
Show are held by the various clubs around Queensland and the rest of Australia. There are also cavy sections at some Agricultural Shows in Queensland. These are generally hosted by one of the eight local clubs. Generally club shows have classes for pet (non-pedigree) animals as well as for pedigree cavies. Some clubs also hold fun days and training days where members learn more about showing cavies. People of all ages can show their cavies and the fancy welcomes newcomers. Clubs also have club champion and point score systems. If you are interested in showing your pet or pedigree cavy please contact your local club for more information. |
Showing Tips for Newcomers
Showing cavies may be a little daunting for newcomers. The QCC would like to share some tips for those just starting out in the fancy.
1. Contact the QCC to find an affiliated club in your area.
2. Contact your local club and ask for a membership form, entry form and show schedule. If necessary talk to the show manager to find out which class/classes your pet or pedigree cavy is eligible to compete in.
3. Put your entry forms in on time and make sure you know where the show is being held.
4. Ensure you have a suitable carry cage.
5. Please make sure your cavy is clean. Cavies can be bathed in a gentle shampoo such as baby shampoo or one especially formulated for them. Generally bath and dry them the day before the show and keep them clean overnight.
6. Carefully trim toenails making sure you just take tip off. If you cut too much off the toenail will bleed.
7. On show day allow plenty of time to arrive at the venue and set up. This also means show organisers will have a better chance to answer any of your questions.
8. Take a brush and a mat (it can be a small carpet square) or a show board for your animal to sit on while being judged.
9. Listen for your number to be called; it can be noisy in some venues, so check with the Show Manager or Show Steward to see when your class will be coming up.
10. Most importantly have fun. Showing cavies is a great way of meeting people and learning more about this fascinating animal.
